NAIDOC WEEK 2021 FEATURING CHARMAINE PWERLE

For NAIDOC Week 2021, Pwerle Gallery collaborated with Westfield Marion and our beautiful friends at Hygge Studio to present an immersive activation featuring the bold, contemporary work of Charmaine Pwerle. At the centre of the project was a striking Infinity Wall installation, wrapped in Charmaine’s distinctive Awelye Atnwengerrp designs. The rhythmic lines and vibrant colour palette created an unmissable focal point within the shopping centre, bringing Aboriginal culture and storytelling into an everyday public space in a way that was both visually powerful and deeply meaningful.

The journey of this installation began with a single 30cm x 30cm artwork by Charmaine Pwerle. Painted with her signature Dreamtime story Awelye Atnwengerrp, the intimate piece was high-resolution photographed and then transformed into a monumental printed decal that enveloped the Infinity Wall. By magnifying the work in scale, the project translated the detailed and ancestral mark-making of the artist into a dynamic, immersive environment that people could physically step into and experience. This process highlighted how contemporary Aboriginal art can shift fluidly between canvas and space, adapting to new forms while retaining its cultural integrity and story.
The installation was designed not only to celebrate NAIDOC Week but also to provide a physical and interactive experience for children and families. Customers were encouraged to engage with the space posing for photos, touching, and exploring the Infinity Wall — making it more than just an artwork, but a shared cultural encounter. This interactivity created a unique photo opportunity that saw families and children joyfully capturing their experiences, filling the space with energy and connection.

By merging contemporary Aboriginal art with retail design, the 2021 activation invited people of all ages to reflect on the importance of Aboriginal culture while celebrating its vibrancy in a modern context. For Pwerle Gallery, the project was brought to life with Westfield Marion and Hygge Studio demonstrated how art can move beyond the gallery walls to create memorable, community-driven experiences that leave a lasting impression.
