Mazi Wines — its name meaning “together” in Greek — was born from the vision of lifelong friends Toby Porter and Alex Katsaros, rooted in McLaren Vale’s wine country and shaped by a passion for dry, European-style rosés. In a special gesture of creative synergy and cultural recognition, Mazi partnered with Pwerle Gallery to feature artworks by the late Minnie Pwerle on three of their rosé label releases. Each label became a celebration, not only of the wine inside the bottle, but of the living art and stories of Atnwengerrp, the Country of Minnie’s ancestral Dreamings.
Though the details of each design remain private, all three labels carried Minnie’s bold sweeping Awelye patterns and gestural lines that reflect movement, ceremony, and connection to land. The collaboration created an elegant meeting point between fine winemaking and Aboriginal storytelling, offering wine lovers an experience that was both aesthetic and spiritual.
At a deeper level, this collaboration honours how Pwerle Gallery evolved from DACOU — our sister gallery founded by Fred Torres and continues Minnie’s legacy in contemporary contexts. By placing her art on wine bottles shared around tables and gatherings, we upheld the tradition of storytelling, made cultural heritage part of celebration, and demonstrated to commercial partners the potential of cross-industry projects realised with integrity and cultural insight.
For Mazi, it elevated their label with meaning and depth. For Pwerle Gallery, it allowed Minnie’s legacy to reach new audiences — turning bottles into canvases, and meals into moments of connection to Country.
Crafted by Mazi Wines, the 2022 Tora is the second act in their rosé winemaking journey — a light dry red made from the most concentrated portions of Mataro and Cinsault rosé juice. Partially barrel-fermented and matured in French oak, it shows flavours of Asian spice, red cherry, cranberry, musk and violet — a wine for all seasons.
This release is 1 of 2 bottles in the collection featuring a custom Minnie Pwerle label, honouring her iconic artwork and story. Available exclusively via Mazi Wines.
