Artist

Abie Loy Kemarre (b. 1972) is a respected Anmatyerre artist from Utopia, Central Australia, and part of a celebrated artistic family that includes her grandmother Kathleen Petyarre and mother Margaret Loy Pula. She began painting in 1994 under Kathleen’s guidance, developing a refined style of delicate dotting and layered colour. Her principal Dreamings include Bush Hen, Bush Medicine Leaf, Sandhills, Emu, and Awelye (women’s body paint designs), which she paints with a sense of rhythm and optical movement that has become her signature.

Over her career, Abie has exhibited widely across Australia and internationally, including major shows in Europe, Japan, and the USA. Her works are held in leading public and private collections such as the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Bridgestone Museum in Tokyo.

Artwork Information

Dreaming

The Bush Medicine Seeds Dreaming reflects women’s knowledge of healing plants around Utopia, where seeds and leaves are collected, crushed, and mixed with animal fat to make traditional medicines. Ceremony and song keep this knowledge strong, ensuring its potency for future generations.

On canvas, Abie Loy represents these seeds and leaves through intricate dotting and layered brushwork, creating movement that suggests desert winds, seasonal cycles, and the shimmer of Country in bloom. Her Bush Medicine Seeds paintings celebrate both the beauty of Utopia’s plant life and its role in survival, healing, and regeneration.
