'BLOOMING' EXHIBITION AT BURNSIDE VILLAGE SA X HYGGE STUDIO

When Four Generations Collide

In 2023, Pwerle Gallery joined forces with Hygge Studio to present Blooming — an immersive installation that brought together art, design, and nature in celebration of Aboriginal culture and Country. Held at Burnside Village, South Australia, the project unveiled 40 new works inspired by the untamed beauty of Utopia’s wildflowers.

Rich in colour and layered in meaning, the collection featured pieces by four generations of artists: Emily Pwerle, the late Barbara Weir, Lizzie Pwerle, Dora Mbitjana, Freddy Purla, Charmaine Pwerle, Jade Akamarre, and her younger sister, Mariah Akamarre.

Curated by Jade Torres, the exhibition was conceived as both an ode to Country and a celebration of legacy. The works glowed with the iridescence of Utopia’s desert blossoms, translating the land’s renewal and flourishing into painted form. In the same spirit, the exhibition itself represented cultural flourishing — a family’s lineage thriving across decades, each artist contributing their own voice to the shared story of Atnwengerrp.

An Immersive Installation

Together, Pwerle Gallery and Hygge Studio transformed Burnside Village into a sanctuary of art and nature. Visitors entered a space that felt alive — walls adorned with vivid canvases, each radiating colour and energy, while carefully chosen plantings echoed the wildflowers that inspired the works. The installation blurred the boundary between artwork and environment, creating a visual and sensory immersion where audiences could feel the connection between Country, culture, and creativity.

Over two weeks, the pop-up became more than an exhibition — it was an experience. Guests were invited to pause within the bustle of Burnside Village and encounter Aboriginal art in a contemporary retail setting, surrounded by greenery, blossoms, and vibrant works that spoke of renewal. By uniting cultural artistry with botanical design, Blooming highlighted how Country and creativity remain inseparably bound, flourishing together in both tradition and modernity.

A Celebration of Generations

Blooming stood as a tribute to both land and lineage. Six artists across four generations were celebrated in one space, embodying the resilience, continuity, and evolution of one family’s creative legacy. The installation gave equal weight to senior custodians and emerging voices, showing how culture is not static but ever-blooming, just like the desert flowers that inspired the collection.

By situating Aboriginal art within a highly visible, everyday public setting, the project also expanded access and appreciation. For Burnside Village visitors, Blooming was a moment to encounter the vibrancy of Aboriginal creativity outside the confines of a gallery, while for Pwerle Gallery it was another opportunity to reaffirm its mission: to protect legacy, champion culture, and carry forward the voices of Atnwengerrp.
